Prayer is communicating with God — speaking to Him and listening for His voice. The Bible is filled with instruction, examples, and encouragement about prayer from Genesis to Revelation.
What Is Prayer?
Prayer is simply talking with God as you would with a trusted Father. Philippians 4:6 says: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
How Did Jesus Teach Us to Pray?
In Matthew 6:9-13, Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer as a model. It includes: adoration (“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name”), submission (“Your kingdom come, your will be done”), petition (“Give us today our daily bread”), confession (“Forgive us our debts”), and protection (“Deliver us from the evil one”).
Key Principles of Prayer from Scripture
- Pray with faith — Matthew 21:22: “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer”
- Pray persistently — Luke 18:1: “Always pray and not give up”
- Pray according to God’s will — 1 John 5:14: “If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us”
- Pray with thanksgiving — Colossians 4:2: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful”
- Pray in Jesus’ name — John 14:13-14: Access to the Father comes through Jesus
Does God Always Answer Prayer?
Yes — but not always in the way we expect. God answers prayer in three ways: yes (granting what we ask), no (because He knows better), and wait (because His timing is perfect). Romans 8:28 assures us that all things work together for good for those who love God.
