Title: Building on the Rock
Key Passage: Matthew 7:24-25 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
Message:
Everyone is building a life. The question is not if you are building, but what you are building on. In this parable, Jesus makes it clear that there are only two options for a foundation: solid rock or shifting sand. Both builders in the story experienced the same storm. The storms of life—illness, financial trouble, relational conflict, disappointment—are inevitable. They come to everyone.
The difference between survival and collapse was not the quality of the storm, but the quality of the foundation. The wise builder built his house on the rock. Jesus explicitly defines what this rock is: hearing His words and putting them into practice. It’s a foundation of active obedience. It’s not enough to simply hear sermons, read the Bible, or agree with Christian teachings. Wisdom is demonstrated when we translate that hearing into doing.
The foolish builder, on the other hand, heard the same words but chose to ignore them. He built his life on the sand of public opinion, fleeting feelings, worldly wisdom, or his own convenience. On a calm day, his house looked just as good as the wise man’s. But when the storm hit, the lack of a solid foundation was exposed, and the collapse was total. A life built on anything other than the unchangeable truth of Christ and His Word cannot withstand the pressures of this world.
Application:
Consider one area of your life where you know what God’s Word says, but you have struggled to put it into practice (e.g., forgiveness, generosity, honesty). What is one small, concrete step you can take this week to move from simply hearing to actively doing in that area?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for your words, which are a solid rock for my life. Forgive me for the times I have heard your truth but have failed to obey. I want to be a wise builder. Help me to not just be a hearer of the Word, but a doer. Expose any sandy foundations in my life and give me the grace and strength to rebuild on the rock of your truth. May my life stand firm in you when the storms come. Amen.
