Title: Gratitude in All Seasons
Key Passage: 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Message:
It’s easy to be thankful when things are going well. When we get a promotion, when our health is good, when our relationships are thriving—gratitude flows naturally. But what about when life is hard? What about in the midst of loss, disappointment, or pain? This verse presents a radical challenge: give thanks “in all circumstances.”
Notice the small but crucial word “in.” The verse doesn’t say we should give thanks for all circumstances. We don’t have to thank God for evil, for sickness, or for sin. But it does say we can give thanks in the midst of them. This is possible because our gratitude is not based on our circumstances, but on our God, who remains good, faithful, and sovereign over all circumstances.
This practice of giving thanks in every season is not just a suggestion; it is described as “God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Why? Because gratitude is a powerful act of faith. It declares that even when we can’t see what God is doing, we trust His character. It shifts our focus from our problems to His promises. It breaks the power of negativity and despair and opens our hearts to experience His presence and peace, even in the storm.
Application:
Start a “gratitude list.” No matter what your circumstances are today, write down five specific things you are thankful for. They can be big (salvation) or small (a cup of coffee). Make this a daily practice to train your heart to find reasons for gratitude in every situation.
Prayer:
Father, it is not always easy, but I choose to obey Your will and give thanks today. Thank you that even in difficult circumstances, You are with me. Thank you for Your unchanging love, Your constant presence, and Your ultimate victory in Christ. Help me to cultivate a heart of gratitude, not just in the good times, but in all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
