Title: The Lord is My Shepherd
Key Passage: Psalm 23:1-3 – “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”
Message:
In our complex and often confusing world, it’s easy to feel lost. We wonder if we’re making the right decisions, if we’re on the right path, or if we’ll have what we need for the journey ahead. The opening line of this beloved Psalm provides the ultimate answer to our deepest needs for provision, rest, and guidance. To say “The LORD is my shepherd” is to declare our complete trust and dependence on Him.
A good shepherd knows exactly what his sheep need, and he provides it. David, a shepherd himself, knew this intimately. The Shepherd makes us “lie down in green pastures”—a place of nourishment and satisfaction. He “leads me beside quiet waters”—a place of peace and refreshment. When our souls are weary and depleted from the frantic pace of life, He is the one who “refreshes” and restores us. We don’t have to live in a state of constant lack or striving; our Shepherd provides.
Furthermore, the Shepherd is a guide. He doesn’t just provide for our needs and then leave us to find our own way. He “guides me along the right paths.” This is a promise of divine direction. We may not always see the full map, but we can trust the Guide who does. And His guidance is not arbitrary; it is “for his name’s sake.” He leads us well because His own reputation and character are invested in our journey. Our lives, when guided by Him, bring glory to His name.
Application:
Are you feeling a lack of peace, provision, or direction? Take a moment to stop striving and picture Jesus as your Good Shepherd. In prayer, ask Him to lead you to “green pastures” of His Word, to the “quiet waters” of His presence, and to guide your next step along the right path.
Prayer:
Lord, you are my Shepherd. Forgive me for trying to be my own shepherd, for striving and worrying. I declare today that I trust in You. Lead me to rest. Refresh my weary soul. Guide my decisions and my steps today, that my life might bring honor and glory to Your name. I shall not want, because I have You. Amen.
