What Is Grace in the Bible?

Grace is one of the most important words in the Christian faith. The simplest definition is: God’s unmerited favor — receiving what we do not deserve. Where justice gives us what we deserve, and mercy withholds what we deserve, grace goes further — giving us blessings we could never earn.

Grace in the Old Testament

The Hebrew word chesed (often translated “lovingkindness” or “steadfast love”) captures God’s covenant grace in the OT. Psalm 103:8 declares: “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” God’s grace was always present — shown to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Israel despite their failures.

Grace in the New Testament

The Greek word charis (grace) appears over 150 times in the NT. John 1:14 describes Jesus as “full of grace and truth.” The fullest expression of grace is the cross — God giving His Son to die for sinners who deserve judgment.

Grace and Salvation

Ephesians 2:8-9 is the key verse: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.” Salvation cannot be earned — it is a free gift of grace received through faith.

Grace for Daily Living

Grace is not just for salvation — it empowers daily Christian living. 2 Corinthians 12:9 records God’s promise: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Every day, we live and serve by the grace God freely gives (Hebrews 4:16).
