The Book of Revelation is the final book of the Bible and one of the most misunderstood. It is not primarily a horror story of doom and gloom — it is a book of hope, revealing that Jesus Christ is Lord over all of history and that His victory is certain and complete.

Author: The Apostle John, writing from exile on the island of Patmos
Date: ~AD 95, during Emperor Domitian’s persecution of Christians
Genre: Apocalyptic prophecy — a letter containing visions of heavenly realities and future events, written in symbolic language
Purpose: To encourage persecuted Christians that God is in control and Jesus wins

How to Read Revelation

Revelation uses symbolic, apocalyptic language — numbers, colors, beasts, and images drawn heavily from Daniel, Ezekiel, and Zechariah. Key principles: (1) Read it as a letter to real first-century churches facing real persecution; (2) Recognize symbols from the OT; (3) Focus on the main message: Jesus is King and His people will be vindicated.
