Title: Come and Rest
Key Passage: Matthew 11:28-30 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Message:
Life is exhausting. We are weary from the demands of work, the pressures of family, the weight of our own expectations, and the heavy burden of our sin and shame. We chase after rest through vacations, entertainment, and endless scrolling, but these only offer temporary relief, not the deep, soul-level rest we crave. We are a generation that is both perpetually busy and profoundly tired.
Jesus extends the most beautiful invitation to every weary soul. He doesn’t say, “Try harder,” or “Get your life together first.” He simply says, “Come to me.” The first step to finding rest is to turn to Him. He is the source of the rest we are so desperately searching for. He promises not just to help us carry our burdens, but to give us His rest in exchange for them.
The imagery Jesus uses is of a yoke—a wooden bar that joins two oxen together to pull a load. A yoke is a tool of work, which seems counterintuitive for finding rest. But Jesus invites us to take His yoke upon us. This means we are no longer pulling the load of life by ourselves. We are yoked to Him, the gentle and humble one, who walks alongside us, bearing the weight. As we learn from His ways, His pace, and His heart, we discover that the burden He gives us—a life of love and obedience—is incomparably lighter than the one we tried to carry alone.
Application:
What burdens are you carrying today? Name them specifically. In a moment of prayer, visualize yourself handing those burdens over to Jesus and taking His yoke upon you. Ask Him to teach you His gentle and humble way as you walk with Him throughout the day.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I am weary and burdened. I am tired of trying to carry the weight of my life on my own. I come to you now, just as I am. I give you my anxieties, my failures, and my exhaustion. I take your yoke upon me. Teach me your ways, and help me to find true rest for my soul in you. Thank you that your yoke is easy and your burden is light. Amen.
