Unlikely Heroes: God’s Use of Broken People in Scripture

As Christians, we often look up to superstars of the faith, people who have accomplished great things for God. But what about those who may not seem like heroes at first glance? The Bible is full of stories about ordinary people who did extraordinary things for God, despite their flaws and limitations. In this article, we’ll explore some of these unlikely heroes and learn from their stories.

Key Scriptures

David: The Shepherd Boy

One of the most well-known unlikely heroes in Scripture is David, a young shepherd boy who became the king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:14-23). Despite being young and inexperienced, David trusted in God’s power and faithfulness. As Jesus taught, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Jonah: The Reluctant Prophet

Another unlikely hero is Jonah, a prophet who was reluctant to obey God’s command (Jonah 1:1-3). God told Jonah to go to Nineveh and warn the people of their wicked ways. But Jonah tried to run from God’s will and ended up in the belly of a whale. Yet, even in his rebellion, Jonah learned that “it is good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees” (Psalm 119:71).

Naaman: The Loyal Servant

Naaman was a loyal servant of the king of Aram who suffered from leprosy (2 Kings 5:1-14). He heard about Elisha, a prophet who could heal him, but Naaman was skeptical. God used a simple servant girl to convince Naaman to seek out Elisha’s help. As Jesus taught, “My Father has always wanted you to have the very best. And now He wants you to take part in the great blessings He has stored up for you beyond your highest hopes!” (John 10:10, paraphrased).

Bartholomew: The Unnamed Disciple

Bartholomew was one of the 12 apostles who followed Jesus (Matthew 10:3). He is mentioned by name only once in Scripture (Matthew 10:3), but his lack of fame does not diminish his importance. Bartholomew represents the many unnamed believers who have been used mightily by God.

Practical Applications

Trusting in God’s Power and Faithfulness

Just like David, we can trust that God sees our hearts and not just our outward appearance. When we are confident in His power and faithfulness, we can accomplish great things for Him. Practice trusting God by praying Psalm 119:71 and surrendering to His will.

Surrendering to God’s Will

Just like Jonah, we can struggle with obedience and try to run from God’s will. But when we surrender and trust in His goodness, we can experience incredible blessings. Practice surrendering to God’s will by praying John 10:10 and seeking guidance through prayer and Scripture.

Serving God without Seeking Recognition or Fame

Just like Bartholomew, we can be humble and willing to serve God without seeking recognition or fame. When we do His will, we can experience great joy and satisfaction. Practice serving God without seeking recognition by praying Matthew 5:14-15 and focusing on His kingdom.

Testimony or Real-Life Example

I know a young woman who was once shy and introverted. She struggled to share her faith with others, feeling like she wasn’t good enough or worthy of being used by God. But as she surrendered to His will and trusted in His power, she began to experience incredible breakthroughs and blessings. Today, she is a bold witness for Christ, sharing her faith with anyone who will listen.

Encouragement and Prayer

Dear God, help us to see ourselves as you see us – broken but forgiven, ordinary but used mightily by you. May we trust in your power and faithfulness, even when we don’t understand your plans. Use us to accomplish great things for your kingdom, and may our lives be a reflection of your love and greatness. Amen.

Conclusion

The Bible is full of unlikely heroes who were used mightily by God despite their flaws and limitations. David, Jonah, Naaman, and Bartholomew represent the many ordinary people who have accomplished extraordinary things for God. As we learn from their stories, we can trust that God sees our hearts and not just our outward appearance. We can surrender to His will, no matter how difficult it may seem, and experience incredible blessings.

May we be encouraged by these unlikely heroes and strive to serve God with humble hearts, trusting in His power and faithfulness every step of the way.
